IPTV EPG Not Working or Updating? Complete Guide

An electronic program guide that's missing, blank, or stuck showing old listings has a specific set of causes separate from channel playback issues — here's how to fix it.

The electronic program guide (EPG) is what shows you what's currently airing and what's coming up next, and it's a genuinely separate piece of data from the channels themselves — which is why you can have perfectly working channels alongside a broken or missing guide. This guide walks through why that happens and how to get accurate, up-to-date listings back.

How the EPG Actually Works (and Why It Can Break Separately)

Your channel list comes from your M3U playlist or Xtream Codes login, but program guide data typically comes from a separate source called XMLTV — either bundled with your playlist automatically or provided as a second link you enter separately in the app. Because it's a distinct data feed, it can fail, go stale, or load incorrectly even while every channel plays perfectly.

Common EPG Problems and Fixes

These cover the most frequent guide-specific issues.

No Program Data Shown At All

This usually means the app either doesn't have an XMLTV link configured, or your provider's playlist doesn't include EPG data by default. Check your app's settings for a separate EPG or XMLTV URL field — some apps require this to be entered manually, separate from the main playlist link.

Guide Shows Outdated or Incorrect Listings

EPG data is refreshed periodically, and a guide that hasn't updated in several days is often stuck on a cached version. Clearing the app's cache, or manually refreshing the EPG from within the app's settings if that option exists, usually resolves this.

Guide Loads for Some Channels but Not Others

This typically means the XMLTV data source doesn't include listings for every channel in your playlist — a gap on the data provider's end rather than something wrong with your setup. It's common with smaller or regional channels specifically.

Guide Times Are Off by an Hour or More

This is almost always a timezone mismatch between the EPG data source and your device's local settings. Check that your device's timezone and daylight saving settings are correct, and look for a timezone offset setting within the app itself if the mismatch persists.

Guide Is Extremely Slow to Load

Large EPG datasets covering thousands of channels over several days can take real time to parse, especially on lower-powered devices. This is usually a one-time delay on first load rather than an ongoing issue.

Why VLC and Some Apps Don't Show an EPG at All

General-purpose players like VLC play the video stream but don't have a built-in interface for displaying program guide data, even if an XMLTV feed is technically available — see our VLC setup guide for what it does and doesn't support. If a full guide matters to you day-to-day, a dedicated IPTV app is generally the better fit; our comparison of IPTV Smarters Pro and VLC covers this difference directly.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  1. Confirm your app has an XMLTV or EPG URL configured, if it requires one separately
  2. Check your device's timezone settings are correct
  3. Clear the app's cache to force a fresh EPG download
  4. Confirm channels themselves are playing normally (rules out a broader playlist issue)
  5. Give a fresh EPG source up to 24 hours to fully populate after first setup

Tip

If your channel list itself is having trouble, that's a separate issue from the EPG — see our playlist troubleshooting guide.

Frequently asked questions

Channels and program guide data come from separate sources — your playlist provides the channels, while a separate XMLTV feed provides the guide. It's entirely possible for one to work while the other doesn't.
