If IPTV buffers more on your LG Smart TV than it does on a phone or streaming stick on the exact same Wi-Fi, the cause is usually something specific to webOS rather than your internet plan. This guide covers the LG-specific fixes. If the picture stutters, shows a "soap opera effect," or an app freezes without buffering, our LG playback problems guide covers those separately, and our general buffering guide covers the network-side causes that apply to every device.
Why LG Smart TVs Sometimes Buffer More Than Other Devices
LG's webOS runs its own background processes — software update checks, content recommendations, and on newer models voice assistant features — that compete for the same processor and memory an IPTV app needs to decode and buffer video smoothly. On older or lower-powered LG models especially, that overhead can show up as more frequent buffering than the same channel gets on a phone or a dedicated streaming stick, even on identical Wi-Fi. None of this means anything is wrong with your subscription or your internet plan specifically — our LG WebOS setup guide covers checking your webOS version, which is a useful first step before troubleshooting further.
Check for a Pending webOS Update
On most current LG TVs (webOS 5.0 and newer, roughly 2020 onward), go to Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates. On older webOS versions (4.5 and earlier), the same option is under Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates instead. LG regularly patches performance issues that have nothing to do with security, and an outdated webOS version is a common, overlooked cause of streaming performance that's worse than it should be.
Switch to a Wired Connection If Possible
A wired Ethernet connection removes Wi-Fi signal strength as a variable entirely, and it's one of the most effective single changes for a Smart TV positioned any distance from the router. Not every LG model has a built-in Ethernet port, and port placement varies by model year, so check your specific TV's ports or manual rather than assuming one is there. Our Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet guide covers the full comparison if running a cable isn't practical in your setup.
Turn Off TruMotion and Extra Picture Processing
LG's TruMotion and similar motion-smoothing features add real-time processing to every frame before it reaches the screen, which can add a small amount of extra load on lower-powered models. On webOS 6.0 and newer (2021 onward), it's under Settings > All Settings > Picture > Advanced Settings > Clarity > TruMotion; on 2020 and earlier models, the path is Settings > All Settings > Picture > Advanced Mode Settings > Picture Option > TruMotion. Labels can still vary by model, so check your TV's own manual if neither matches exactly. Turning it off won't fix a genuine bandwidth shortage, but it's a quick, reversible thing to try if buffering seems to cluster around fast motion specifically — sports and action scenes — on an older or base-model TV.
Restart the TV, Not Just the App
Closing and reopening the IPTV app clears its own cache but leaves webOS's other background processes running. Fully restarting the TV — powering it off and back on, not just standby — clears all of it at once, and it's worth doing periodically even when nothing seems wrong, not only when buffering starts.
When It's One Channel or One Time of Day
If buffering is isolated to a specific channel, or mainly happens at a specific time of day, that points toward your provider's servers rather than the TV or your home network. A single channel that consistently buffers while everything else plays smoothly is worth reporting to your provider; buffering that shows up mainly in the evening, across several channels, is more often general network congestion — the LG-specific steps above won't fix either of those causes, since the bottleneck isn't on the TV itself.
Confirming It's the TV and Not Your Network
If the same channel buffers on a phone or laptop on the same Wi-Fi, the cause is your network rather than the TV specifically — our buffering troubleshooting guide covers the network-side fixes in full. If it's isolated to the LG TV while other devices stream the same channel smoothly, the steps above are the right place to start, and our internet speed guide covers the minimum bandwidth each quality tier actually needs, in case the TV is simply defaulting to a higher setting than your connection can sustain.
Frequently asked questions
webOS runs background processes — update checks, recommendations, and on newer models voice features — that share the same processor and memory an IPTV app needs. Older or lower-powered LG models feel this more than newer ones.
