Kodi is free, open-source media center software available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and several streaming boxes. It doesn't include or promote any channels itself — to watch IPTV in Kodi, you enable its Live TV framework and point it at your own subscription's playlist or login using the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on. Here's the correct way to set that up.
What Kodi Actually Is (and Isn't)
Kodi is a general-purpose media center for organizing and playing local files, network media, and — with the right add-on — live TV. It has no built-in channel list or IPTV service of its own; live TV support only exists through its PVR (Personal Video Recorder) framework, which needs a specific add-on that knows how to talk to your particular source. This guide covers the official PVR IPTV Simple Client, which supports standard M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins directly.
Installing the PVR IPTV Simple Client Add-on
- Open Kodi and go to Settings (the gear icon) > Add-ons
- Select "Install from repository"
- Choose "PVR clients"
- Select "PVR IPTV Simple Client" and click Install
- Wait for the confirmation notification that the add-on has been enabled
Configuring Your Playlist or Xtream Codes Login
Once installed, open the add-on's settings (Add-ons > My add-ons > PVR clients > PVR IPTV Simple Client > Configure) to enter your subscription details.
Using an M3U Playlist URL
Under the "General" tab, set the M3U Play List URL location to "Remote path (Internet address)" and paste your playlist link into the field that appears. See our M3U playlist guide if you're unsure which link to use.
Using an Xtream Codes Login

Setting Up EPG Data in Kodi
On the "EPG Settings" tab of the same configuration screen, set the XMLTV URL location the same way as your playlist, pointing it at your provider's EPG or XMLTV link if one is provided separately from the playlist itself. Enabling Live TV in the Kodi Interface
After saving your settings, go to Settings > Live TV and toggle "Enabled" for the PVR IPTV Simple Client. Return to Kodi's home screen and a "TV" section should now appear. The first load can take several minutes for a large channel list, since Kodi is parsing the entire playlist and matching it against EPG data.
Tip
If channels don't appear immediately after enabling Live TV, go back into the PVR client's settings and confirm your playlist URL was saved correctly before assuming something is broken.
Kodi vs. Dedicated IPTV Apps
Kodi's strength is flexibility — it can combine live TV with a local media library and other add-ons in one interface, which dedicated IPTV apps don't attempt to do. Common Kodi IPTV Problems
A few issues come up specifically in Kodi's PVR setup.
Channels Don't Appear After Adding a Source
Double-check the M3U URL location is set to "Remote path" rather than "Local path," a common mix-up, and confirm the link was pasted without extra spaces or line breaks.
